Maximilian Leopold Otto Ferdinand Freiherr von der Goltz (born April 19, 1838 in Königsberg , † December 20, 1906 in Potsdam ) was a German admiral .

Life

origin

Max was the son of the manor owner Amadeus Bogislaw Ferdinand von der Goltz (* February 11, 1804 - March 23, 1851) and his wife Louise, née Hempel (* March 13, 1812 - September 12, 1894).

Military career

Goltz joined the Prussian Navy on October 28, 1853 , became an ensign in the sea in 1859 and in 1861 a second class lieutenant in the sea . As such, he made a trip to Japan and China on the frigate SMS Gazelle between 1863 and 1865 . In 1865 he became a lieutenant captain and shortly before the Franco-Prussian War in 1870 he became a corvette captain . He was then assigned to service at the Ministry of the Navy .

Goltz was promoted to sea captain in 1875 and then made several trips as the commander of the corvette SMS Augusta to South America ( Brazil ) and the West Indies . Between 1877 and 1882 he reorganized the Kaiserliche Werft Kiel as chief shipyard director . He then became commander of the Gneisenau covered corvette and chief of the Mediterranean squadron during the Urabi uprising in Egypt . From 1883 he was head of the squadron at the East Asian naval station .

In 1883 Goltz was promoted to rear admiral and at the same time appointed director of the admiralty. When he was appointed Vice Admiral in 1888, he became chief of the North Sea naval station in Wilhelmshaven . As the commanding admiral, he was entrusted with the high command of the Imperial Navy as early as 1889 . In 1892 Goltz was finally promoted to admiral. Goltz responded negatively to a request from the Prussian military cabinet about the necessary establishment of naval attachés , which had been considered an important step up to 1894 due to the reorganization of the French army and the navy. Nevertheless, with the cabinet order of November 19, 1894, Rudolf Siegel was sent to Paris as the first German naval attaché .

On May 13, 1895, Goltz was placed at the disposition and at the same time à la suite of the naval officer corps. He was u. a. Holder of the Grand Cross with Oak Leaves of the Red Eagle Order and the Crown Order 1st Class.
