Karl Rudolf Felix Stubenrauch (born March 7, 1850 in Bütow , † September 15, 1931 in Mönkeberg ) was a German rear admiral .

Life

Stubenrauch grew up on Gut Bütow in Pomerania . On April 15, 1867, he joined the Prussian Navy as a cadet , which in 1871 became the Imperial Navy . He completed his first major sea voyage with the destination West Indies on the sailing frigate Niobe . In 1875 he was flag lieutenant of Rear Admiral Ludwig von Henk on the staff of the armored training squadron. He later became an officer on watch on the tank frigate Großer Kurfürst . In 1878 this ship was rammed by the armored frigate King Wilhelm during a maneuver in the English Channel and badly damaged. In this accident, 269 of the 487 crew members drowned. Stubenrauch left the sinking ship very late and survived.

From 1885 to 1886 Stubenrauch was in command of the steam cannon boat Cyclop , which belonged to the West Africa squadron. Stubenrauch had the task of mapping the coast of the Cameroon River , but had to interrupt this work again and again because his ship's crew was ravaged by tropical diseases. While staying in the country, Stubenrauch took part in the planting of cocoa trees on the Hansemann plantation. Finally, however, a malaria epidemic broke out on the Cyclop . Stubenrauch therefore brought the crew to St. Helena in the South Atlantic to recover . In autumn 1886 the Cyclop was ordered back to Kiel . He was then used from December 5, 1886 to February 10, 1887 as the first officer on the cruiser corvette Luise . Then Stubenrauch was placed at the disposal of the Second Marine Inspection, on June 28, 1887, he was assigned to the Hydrographic Office of the Reichsmarinamt and promoted to Corvette Captain on April 17, 1888 .

From there, Stubenrauch was transferred from May 1 to September 11, 1889, as first officer on the Oldenburg tank corvette . From 1891 to 1893 he trained junior seafarers as commander on the Luise ; from 1892 he took on the same task on the larger Gneisenau , with which he also completed a winter trip to the West Indies and Venezuela . After the Gneisenau was damaged in a collision with a torpedo boat during a maneuver off Kiel, he took over the ironclad Wörth in 1894 . On January 27, 1894, Stubenrauch was promoted to sea captain and on March 29, 1894, took over command of the Heligoland naval base .

In 1898 he was given command of the great cruiser Kaiser , which served as the flagship of the German East Asia Squadron in Tsingtau . Thus he also became chief of staff of this fleet association. Vice-Admiral Otto von Diederichs was in command . Stubenrauch represented the German Empire with the Kaiser at the coronation celebrations for Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands in Batavia . A little later, his ship ran aground off China on a previously unknown reef and had to be repaired in Hong Kong . In 1899 the Kaiser , who was replaced by Hertha , returned home to Kiel and was decommissioned after an inspection by Kaiser Wilhelm II . On May 7, 1900, Stubenrauch was put to the disposition and received the character of a rear admiral. Until October 15, 1907, he held the post of naval commissioner of the Kaiser Wilhelm Canal .

Stubenrauch was married to Auguste Caroline Mathilde, née Hensen (1855–1941). The marriage produced three daughters. The daughter Irmgard married the later Vice Admiral Albert Hopman on February 6, 1900 in Kiel . The family lived on the Lindenhof in Mönkeberg, where a street is named after Felix Stubenrauch. Stubenrauch was a community representative in Mönkeberg for several years and was also a member of the board of directors of the Kiel seaman's house. The Stubenrauch couple promoted talented students. The Lindenhof remained in the family's possession until 1985 when it was sold to the Mönkeberg community.
