SMS Prinz Heinrich was an armored cruiser ( Großer Kreuzer ) of the former Imperial Navy , named after Grand Admiral Prince Heinrich of Prussia . She was a single ship .
draft
Compared to the previous SMS Fürst Bismarck , the Prinz Heinrich displaced approx. 1,800 t less. The reduced tonnage, the speed of 20 knots and the heavy artillery consisting of only two 24 cm guns served the goal of reducing costs and resulted in a more cruiser-like design.
history
In the First World War the Prinz Heinrich belonged to III. Reconnaissance group and participated as part of the cover forces on December 16, 1914 in the coastal bombardment of Hartlepool by Seydlitz, Blücher and Moltke . From April 1915 she was stationed in the Baltic Sea region. It was there that she experienced her only battle when she shot at Russian destroyers near Zerel on August 10, 1915. At the end of 1915 she was withdrawn from active service due to her poor underwater protection and low speed and disarmed. From March 1916 she only served as a residential ship until she was sold for scrapping in 1920.
