SMS Hay (1907)

SMS Hay was an artillery training boat and tender of the Imperial Navy and the Imperial Navy . She was the third ship of this name in the German Navy, after the two gunboats Hay (1860) and Hay (1881) .

The ship was launched on August 7, 1907 at the Seebeck Shipyard in Geestemünde under yard number 262 from stack . It was 42.9 m long and 8.3 m wide, had a draft of 3.0 m and displaced 640 tons . The top speed was 12 knots . The crew numbered about 55 men. The ship was originally armed with two 10.5 cm rapid loading cannons and two 8.8 cm rapid loading cannons. However, this has been changed several times over the years to meet the requirements of ship artillery training.

The ship was put into service on December 10, 1907 at the "Inspection of the Ship Artillery". It was used to tow sea ​​targets , to secure the firing area, to supply the firing ships and as a school boat.

When the First World War broke out in August 1914, the Hay was assigned to the port flotilla Jade / Weser, where she was used in the outpost service. In 1918 she was the leader of the 2nd half flotilla of the North Sea outpost flotilla .

The Reichsmarine put the ship back into service on April 21, 1922 as an artillery tenderer at the Ship Artillery School (SAS) in Kiel-Wik . It was retired on October 4, 1932 and sold for scrapping.

Hans Ibbeken was in command of the ship from September 1929 to September 1931 with interruptions .
