SNA Radio is the Russian Federation's international broadcaster . The radio station belongs to the Sputnik News Agency and is the successor to Radio Moscow .

program

SNA radio produces programs in several languages. There are separate language services for the USA, India and Great Britain. The German-language program is produced with repeats as a 24-hour service.

distribution

SNA is broadcast as a live stream via the Internet, via the Express AM6 satellite at 53 ° East and via VHF frequencies. However, due to a rather unusual selection of parameters (10.961 MHz vertical, 1.229 kilosymbols per second, FEC 3/4), the satellite signal cannot be correctly received by all common satellite receivers.

The more important voice services, including the German one, can be heard around the clock as an audio live stream . In addition, individual programs are available for download from the German editorial team's website.

Mega Radio SNA

In Germany , the broadcast is based on a cooperation with a German private broadcaster " Mega Radio " from Augsburg . In Berlin-Brandenburg and in the greater Frankfurt am Main area , a program mix with an SNA share of 18 hours is broadcast daily. The Hessian State Authority for Private Broadcasting and New Media issued the license for this, this decision is politically controversial. Mega Radio has been broadcasting via DAB + in Berlin since June 2013. In Bavaria, the media supervisory authority there only issued a license for a music program for Mega Radio, not without the involvement of SNA. After various legal proceedings, the Medienanstalt Berlin-Brandenburg (MABB) decided on February 25, 2019 to switch off the DAB broadcasting of Mega Radio SNA in Berlin from March 1, 2019.

After Mega Radio SNA has applied for a nationwide radio license in Hesse, the legal examination as to whether Mega Radio SNA can act as a program broadcaster with extensive program supplies from state-owned Russian media companies will probably be clarified in court proceedings there. Sputniknews commented on the shutdown in a statement on its website and fears that judicial discretion will result in personally motivated decisions and complains that the rule of law does not protect “against arbitrariness”.

In Austria and Switzerland, too, the transmission takes place in cooperation with Mega Radio, in Vienna in the DAB Ensemble 11C and in Bern and Friborg in the DAB network D04-BE of Digris on channel 10A.

criticism

According to the Federal Agency for Civic Education , SNA posts are often quoted online and shared on Facebook. As a result, the broadcaster achieved a wider impact and was often perceived as a serious source to supplement the established media in the debate on Russia and refugees. The station positions itself as an "alternative" medium and, according to its own statement, broadcasts "that which is deliberately hushed up by the established German media". In contrast to the Russian domestic media, however, SNA does not rely on undisguised disinformation, since such exposure would result in the loss of part of the audience.

After Megaradio SNA reported increasingly positive about protagonists of the right-wing party Alternative for Germany (AfD) and the National Democratic Party of Germany (NPD) from 2016 , the long-time president of the Berlin Academy of the Arts , Klaus Staeck , addressed this support for right-wing German parties by Russian government agencies via a radio program that can be received locally in Germany. According to Staeck, “a propaganda station for the AfD is emerging”. The Hessian State Institute for New Media then admitted on Deutschlandradio Kultur that the station had reported, for example, in great detail about the meeting of European right-wing populists in Koblenz at the beginning of 2017, and that further developments would be monitored.
