The diesel-electric locomotives of the BB 63000 series were built between 1953 and 1968 for the French state railway SNCF . The manufacturer Brissonneau & Lotz in Paris purchased the engines from different manufacturers. Engines from Sulzer from Winterthur and Société Alsacienne de Constructions Mécaniques from Mulhouse were installed.
It was ordered to replace older steam locomotives, especially the type 140C.
Technical
The universal locomotive has a single driver's cab, which is asymmetrically located between the two superstructures and towers over them in terms of width and height. There is a circuit on both sides of the superstructure through which the driver's cab can also be reached.
The only difference between the BB 63001–63108 and 63109–63250 is the different engine and the correspondingly adapted foundations in the engine room. A SACM diesel engine of the type MGO V 12 SH with a bore of 175 mm and a stroke of 180/190 mm are installed in the BB 63001–63108 ex factory. A Sulzer diesel engine of the type 6LDA22D with a bore of 220 mm and a stroke of 290 mm is used in the BB 63109–63195. A Sulzer diesel engine of the type 6LDA22E with a bore of 220 mm and a stroke of 290 mm was installed in the BB 63195-63250. This engine is located under the longer stem.
The initial green paintwork with yellow stripes was later changed to the orange / gray paintwork by Paul Arzens, which is typical for shunting machines .
Operational
The 44 machines that were still in existence at the beginning of 2006 are only used by FRET in freight traffic and in the infrastructure for work trains.
They used to be found in front of all kinds of trains on the entire SNCF network.
Other administrations
Based on these machines, the manufacturer also delivered vehicles to the following railway administrations.
- Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois , as series 850
- Jugoslovenske Železnice , as series 642
- Renfe as series 10700, after the introduction of EDP numbers 307
- Comboios de Portugal , as 1200 series
The Portuguese machines were supplied under license by Sorefame from 1960, they underwent some changes. The replacement of the sliding axle with roller bearings is immediately visible from the outside . The locomotives for the Renfe also received the equipment for the suction air brake , the machines for Portugal were only supplied with suction air brakes for the wagon train. The indirectly acting compressed air brake was not retrofitted to them until the 1990s.
