The Société nationale d'électricité du Burkina , commonly known as SONABEL , is the state electricity company of the West African state of Burkina Faso .
history
SONABEL goes back to the private Energie de l'Afrique Occidentale Française (AOF) founded in 1954 . In 1968 it was converted into a stock corporation under Burkinabe law and renamed Société Voltaïque d'Electricité (VOLTELEC). Under this name, it changed into a public company in 1976 ( Etablissement Public à caractère Industriel et Commercial , EPIC). It was given its current name in 1984 after the Sankarist revolution. In 1997 the statutes of SONABEL, which are still valid today, come into force as a state-owned company ( Société d'Etat ).
On July 4, 2001, the Burkinabe parliament passed a law allowing SONABEL to be privatized . Privatization is being planned today, but concrete steps have not yet been taken as it is met with resistance from numerous parliamentarians.
Infrastructure and production
SONABEL operates 29 thermal and four hydropower plants with a total output of 223 megawatts . In 2006, SONABEL sold 580,537 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity. In-house production is not sufficient to cover the electricity demand at peak times. In 2006 Burkina Faso imported around 140,000 MWh.
