The ship class known as the ST class is a series of three cargo ships operated by the Bremen shipping company DDG “Hansa” .
history
The three ships were originally commissioned on January 21, 1956 by the shipping company Norgulf Shipping from Monrovia at the Bremer Atlas-Werke . The shipping company DDG "Hansa" took over the building contract in order to be able to counter the tonnage shortage of the 1950s.
After their delivery, the ships were used almost exclusively for the journey to the Red Sea at DDG. After the Suez Canal was closed in 1967, the series was no longer suitable for the areas of application of the "Hansa" due to its small size and was sold en bloc to the Shipping Company of India from Bombay in 1968 . This used the ships until 1979 to 1981, before handing them over to the Vijaya Lines, also based in Bombay. The former lead ship Sternenfels capsized as Vijaya Jyoti in Indira Dock in Bombay on October 15, 1980 and was then broken up at Rama Shipbreaking in Bombay, the remaining two ships remained in service until 1985 before they were finally scrapped at Rama Shipbreaking.
technology
The ship type had superstructures arranged aft with machinery below. In front of it there were three holds , each with an intermediate deck, which had a total grain volume of 7341 m 3 and a ball space of 6705 m 3 . The loading gear consisted of eight loading trees with a capacity of 3/5 tons each, two trees of 5/10 tons and a 35 t heavy lift boom, which was arranged in front of hatch III.
The propulsion of the ships consisted of two ten-cylinder four-stroke diesel engines of the type MaK MZu 582 A each with an output of 1930 hp, which acted on the individual fixed propellers via a gearbox. The propulsion system allowed a speed of up to 15.5 knots and had a fuel consumption of around 15 tons per day.
