The locomotives of the ST44 series of Polish State Railways (PKP) are six-axle diesel-electric locomotives for heavy freight service. The ST44 is the Polish variant of type M62 .

PKP series ST44

Parallel to series ST43 PKP procured from 1966 the Soviet Lokomotivfabrik Lugansk (LTS; Russian : Луганский тепловозостроительный завод, Lugansky teplowosostroitelny Sawod, Lugansk diesel locomotive factory and later Ворошиловградский тепловозостроительный завод, Woroschilowgradski teplowosostroitelny Sawod) six-axle locomotives M62 and designated it as ST44.

Due to the design as a freight locomotive, the maximum speed is only 100 km / h, there is no train heating. Characteristic for the ST44 in contrast to the other M62 locomotives are the large headlights that are common on the PKP.

The deliveries of the ST44 continued until 1988 and comprised 1113 standard-gauge locomotives. The PKP were thus both the last railway company in Europe to procure the M62 and the one that received the largest number of M62s.

In 1980 a prototype with Lemniskatenlenker bogies (same design as the DR 130 series ) was delivered to the PKP and classified as the ST44-1500. A series production of this type did not take place.

From 1977 to 1980, an additional 68 ST44 were procured in the Soviet broad gauge ( gauge 1524 mm) for the Linia Hutnicza Szerokotorowa between Sławków (near Będzin ) and the border with the Soviet Union (now Ukraine ) near Hrubieszów .

Most of the ST44 series has already been decommissioned, despite its sometimes young age. In mid-2008 there were still around 70 standard-gauge locomotives in use by the PKP, including ten examples that were repowered by PESA as the ST44-1201-1210 series. In the meantime the locomotives have been modernized up to ST44-1251. PKP-Cargo's ST44 1231 was still in operation in June 2019. There are also a good three dozen locomotives parked in several locations. Larger areas of use can only be found in Zamość and in the Białystok area (depots Białystok, Czeremcha and Suwałki), and some locomotives are also used on the old Eastern Railway (from the depots in Szczecinek, Chojnice, Tczew and a little further north of Gdynia) and from the Upper Silesian depot deployed in Tarnowskie Góry, Rybnik and Łazy. With the ST44-001, the first machine delivered has been preserved in the Warsaw Railway Museum not far from the Central Station.

The broad-gauge ST44 (ST44-2000 series) were transferred to the subsidiary LHS, which was spun off from the PKP and which still has around 40 units in stock. Some of these are being modernized and re-engineered at great expense, as they are indispensable due to the lack of subsequent purchases: In addition to the original version, conversions by the companies Fablok (ST44 3001 and 3002), Newag (ST40s-01 and 02; type 311d) and PESA (locomotives kept their old Number). However, the PKP also had broad-gauge machines at times. For example, ST44 1103 and 1104 drove for some time in border traffic between Braniewo and Russia and had been re-gauged for it.

Type M62 locomotives at Werkbahnen

Further locomotives of the type M62 were delivered to Polish works railways, these run under the plant name "M62". Petrochemia Płock received M62 01 to 06, the sand railways of the Przedsiębiorstwo Materiałów Podsadzkowych Przemysłu Węglowego (PMPPW) received the M62 07 to 09. Other M62s from the inventory of other state railways are in use by other private railway companies in Poland.
