The Saaletalbrücke Jena is part of the federal motorway 4 and spans the Saale , its tributary Roda , the federal highway 88 and the Großheringen – Saalfeld and Weimar – Gera railway lines in the Jena district of Göschwitz .
The 794 m long vault bridge was built between 1938 and 1941 as a section of the Reichsautobahn Berlin-Frankfurt. As part of the six-lane expansion of the motorway ( traffic project German Unity No. 15 ), the listed bridge was supplemented between 2003 and 2006 by a new parallel building in the south. Immediately to the east is the Lobdeburg Tunnel .
Vault bridge
The listed arched bridge, clad with limestone masonry, is 794 m long and is one of the longest of its kind in Germany. During the Second World War , on April 11, 1945, shortly before the American invasion the next day, it was partially blown up. From 1952 to April 15, 1954 the detailed reconstruction took place. The structure consists of the 117 m long foreland bridge west with an arch to the underpass of the main road, the 648 m long main bridge and the 29 m long foreland bridge east. The 17 semicircular vaults of the main bridge have clear widths of 26 to 32.5 m and are mostly built with clinker bricks. The pillar spacing is 33.00 m, 2 × 36.05 m, 2 × 36.77 m, 2 × 37.51 m, 2 × 38.27 m, 2 × 39.03 m, 2 × 39.81 m, 2 × 40.61 m, 41.43 m and 37.50 m, which results in a total length of 648.03 m. The road is at a maximum height of about 21 m above the Saale valley.
In the years 2007 to 2009 the structure was renovated and rebuilt. In the area of the foreland bridge west, a vault was extended over the federal highway 88 and a new reinforced concrete deck was concreted on. In addition, a three meter high noise barrier was installed on the northern side .
Prestressed concrete girder bridge
In addition to the existing bridge, a new 726 m long prestressed concrete bridge was built between 2003 and 2005 on the southern side at a clearance of five meters for the Eisenach-Dresden carriageway . Its 18 Y- pillars consist of two pillar discs, 1.5 m thick and 12.1 m wide, which are curved according to the geometry of the adjacent vaulted bridge. The pillar washers are connected to each other at their heads by a horizontal, hidden drawstring . The foundation was made on large bored piles with a diameter of 1.5 m and lengths of up to 10.7 m.
The superstructure consists of a 19.5 m wide, longitudinally and transversely prestressed, reinforced concrete slab beam with two 1.9 m wide webs and a construction height of 1.5 m. Production was carried out using the incremental launching process with incremental lengths of around 40 m.
The new building was nominated as one of three, originally twenty, structures in the road and railway bridges category for the German Bridge Construction Prize 2008. The construction is based on a design by the engineering office Kleb, with architectural advice from the Hömmerich architecture office, which won the design competition in 1998. The engineering office Kinkel und Partner was responsible for the implementation planning.
