A subject index (or subject index ) is a structured , list-like and quickly accessible collection of information on material goods and / or subjects.

Classic files and directories

• The classic way of a card index in a box - where each index sheet provides a summary of information about a product , topic, book, etc.
• topic-related filing of descriptions and data in office folders - mostly in A4 format . Even with smaller quantities
• alphabetical lists with the names of the above items - and mostly also references where more details can be found - e.g. B.
  • Product information , list of publications
  • Department directory , company directory , commercial register , ship register
• Register that records the technical terms occurring in a work
