The sack was the smallest, last and thus the youngest of the five soft areas in the city of Braunschweig . At the same time, “Sack” is also a street in Braunschweig. It used to be the main street of the Weichbild.
history
The sack was probably created in the years after 1250. The soft picture was first mentioned as "saccus" in 1282. The name of the soft picture is explained by the fact that it is enclosed like a sack by the soft pictures old town and new town . The sack formed the center of the medieval city.
The number of local shoemakers was particularly large, and Schuhstrasse was named after them. Around 1300 the sack received city rights . The Sack was the only Brunswick town to have its own parish church, but like all other inner-city settlements it had its own town hall and its own constitution. The church used by the inhabitants of the sack was the cathedral . The Sackrathaus was first mentioned in 1350, it was located on the streets "Sack" and "Vor der Burg", after 1400 it was rebuilt. In 1671 the sack merged with the other soft forms. In 1739 the Sackrathaus was demolished.
