The Sacramento Bight is a 4 km wide bay on the north coast of South Georgia . It lies between Calf Head and Cape Harcourt .
German scientists who visited South Georgia in the First International Polar Year (1882–1883) named a small side bay of the bay described here as Penguin Bay or Piguinen Bay . In the course of measurements by the South Georgia Survey between 1951 and 1952, it turned out that the name Sacramento Bay was already in use among whale and seal hunters . Since this secondary bay is too insignificant to be named independently, the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee transferred the name in an adapted form in 1955. The further naming background has not been passed down.
