Sacred Heart Church (Grangemouth)

The Sacred Heart Church is a Roman Catholic church building in the Scottish town of Grangemouth in the Falkirk Council Area . In 1978 it was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in Category C. The church is still in use as such today.

history

The Parish Sacred Heart originated in Grangemouth in the late 1880s. The first mass was held on October 27, 1889 in a rented space. From 1897 a building with 200 seats was available to the community. In 1907 the company moved to a building on Kerse Road that was used as a school on weekdays. The foundation stone of today's Sacred Heart Church was laid on November 29, 1925. On May 21, 1927, the church was opened to the public in the presence of Bishop Graham. A Sacred Heart sculpture was donated in August of the same year. It commemorates the fallen of the First World War . Later the church received various stained glass windows. The building was consecrated on November 23, 1955 by Archbishop Gordon Gray .

The church is at the intersection of Dalratho Road and Drummond Place in north Grangemouth. It was made of cut stone blocks to quarry stone in the neo-Gothic style after a project by architect Archibald MacPherson built. The Sacred Heart sculpture rests above the entrance on the western gable end. Arched windows are installed as twin windows along the side aisles. Inside, both the masonry and the arcades are made of brick . The church building ends with an open wooden ceiling. The gable roof is covered with tiles.
