Thomas David Nicholls (born September 16, 1870 in Wilkes-Barre , Pennsylvania , †  January 19, 1931 in Princess Anne , Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1907 and 1911 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

While still a child, Thomas Nicholls came to Nanticoke with his parents , where he attended public schools. As a boy he worked in the mines of his homeland. He later graduated from various mining engineering schools. Then he became a mine supervisor ( Superintendent of Mines ). Between 1899 and 1909 he was the district leader of the United Mine Workers of America union . He resigned from this post for health reasons. Instead, he then embarked on a political career.

In the congressional elections of 1906 , Nicholls was elected as an independent Democrat in the tenth constituency of Pennsylvania to the House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Republican Thomas Henry Dale on March 4, 1907 . After a re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1911 . In 1910 he renounced another candidacy.

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Thomas Nicholls moved to the vicinity of Princess Anne, Maryland, where he ran a poultry farm. He died there on January 19, 1931.
