history

By 1877 the population of Sliema had grown so much that Archbishop Carmelo Scicluna ordered the construction of another church to complement the existing Stella Maris Church . This new church was designed by the architect Giovanni Domenico Debonno and dedicated to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Maltese il-Madonna tas-Sacro Cuor ). The church was given to the Franciscans in 1881 . In 1918 it became the second parish church in Sliema. At the beginning of the 1930s, it was expanded under the direction of the architect Rafael Pitre from Valletta. A number of small domes were added to the side aisles and the roof of the central nave was renewed. The west side received a new facade based on the Baroque style, which is flanked by two bell towers.
