The Pennine Way crosses the area from the Wessenden Valley in the north via Black Hill and Holme Moss in the south.

history

The name of the area is based on the civil parish Saddleworth in which the area is located. Although it is on the west side of the Pennines, it was in the West Riding of Yorkshire until 1974 . Today it belongs to the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham in Greater Manchester and the Metropolitan Borough of Kirklees in West Yorkshire . The areas in the area of West Yorkshire are also known as Wessenden Moor or Wessenden Head Moor .

The moor became a broader public in Great Britain through the crimes of Ian Brady and Myra Hindley referred to as Moors Murders (German: Moor murders) . Two of the victims were discovered in the bog in 1965. A third body was discovered at the location of the hiding place in 1987 based on a photo taken by Myra Hindley. Keith Bennett's body alone remained undiscovered, even if attempts were made to find it. Brady, who himself was once brought into the moor to help in the search, made a. a. Changes in the landscape are responsible for this.

On June 24, 2018, a large fire broke out in the moor, which is why large parts of the population had to evacuate their houses due to the approaching flames and schools were closed. The wide spread of the wildfire is due to the drought, strong winds and unusually high temperatures. The cause of the fire is unclear.
