Life
Sadya Bairou grew up in Essaouira; her parents gave her a feel for art and culture at an early age . From 1988 to 1991 she studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Mulhouse / France and in Tétouan . She was primarily concerned with the legacy of the Arab- Berber culture and its mystical-symbolic imagery. Bairou lived and worked as an artist in Europe and China; since 1994 she has been commuting between Berlin and her hometown Essaouira. As a representative of contemporary Moroccan painting, Sadya Bairou was represented at international exhibitions.
In 2005 she founded the AKAL de l'Art et l'Ecologie (Akal Berber for: earth) center in Essaouira , where young artists can exhibit their work for free.
After her death, an exhibition of her work entitled Traces et mémoires (French for: traces and memories ) took place in 2010 as part of the 13th World Music Festival Festival Gnaoua et Musiques du Monde , which takes place annually in Essaouira, in homage to Sadya Bairou .
