history

SafeNet was founded in 1983 in Timonium, Maryland under the name Industrial Resource Engineering (IRE) . In the beginning, the focus was on selling security solutions for the protection of public and private networks of financial institutions, then the US government was added as a customer. SafeNet is now part of Gemalto, but its products continue to be marketed under the SafeNet name.

In April 2019 Gemalto was bought by the Thales Group and integrated into their product range.

Both Safenet and Gemalto are among the first to support the FIDO alliance , which has been developing the Universal Second Factor (U2F) industry standard for generally applicable two-factor authentication since 2013 .
