The Sagartians ( Asagartiya , Old Persian : Aš-ša-kar-ti-ia , Assyrian : KUR Sa-ga-ar-ta-aa , Greek : Σαγαρτιοι) were an ancient Iranian tribe who inhabited the Iranian highlands . Their exact settlement area is unknown, but they were probably neighbors of the Parthians in northeastern Iran or today's Sistan .

According to Herodotus, they were related to the Persians (southwestern Iranians), but they also entered into a political union with the Medes (northwestern Iranians). Claudius Ptolemy places them in media while Stephanos of Byzantium claims that there is a peninsula called Sagartia on the Caspian Sea . They were nomadic ranchers and their main weapon was the lasso .

It is unclear whether they coincided with the Zikirti who were ruled by Sargon II as residents of northern Zagros in the late 8th century BC. Were called are related. They were awarded the Arbela district by the Median king Kyaxares II as a reward for their help in conquering Nineveh .

According to Herodotus, the Sagartians belonged to the XIV Satrapy of the Achaemenid Empire . A sagartic delegation can be seen among the tribute- bringers on the Apadana relief in Persepolis .
