The Sagdidae are a family of snails from the suborder of land snails (Stylommatophora). It is the only family of the superfamily Sagdoidea Pilsbry, 1894. The almost 80 species are geographically restricted to the Caribbean islands with a few exceptions.
features
The housings are flattened-conical, spherical to very flattened and lens-shaped. Some forms have housings with very thin shells and the housing tends to be reduced. The mouth edges are usually simple, rarely turned over slightly or somewhat thickened. The cases are mostly sparsely ornamented. The jaws are aulacognath, d. H. almost smooth with a few pits. One or more attachments attach to the penis in the hermaphroditic genital apparatus. An epiphallus is present; T. several flagella formed. The stem of the sperm library is relatively long.
Geographical distribution and way of life
The family or superfamily is based on the Caribbean islands. A genus also occurs in northern South America. Schileyko (1998) considers it possible that the genus Xenodiscula Pilsbry, 1919, does not belong to the Sagdidae, but to the superfamily Zonitoidea. Other genera with a few species also occur in southern Florida and possibly in Central America. They are exclusively herbivores that live mainly on the ground.
Systematics
According to the system of Bouchet & Rocroi (2005), the superfamily Sagdoidea contains only one, the eponymous family Sagdidae with four subfamilies. Schileyko (1998) ruled out a monotypical partial subordination ("infraorder"). Sagdoinei Schileyko & Starobogatov, 1988, hierarchically above the superfamily.
