The Sail Rock (from English sail 'sails' ) is a 30 m high cliff rock in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It is 11 km southwest of Deception Island on Bransfield Strait .
The descriptive naming goes back at least to the year 1822 and was probably made by seal hunters . From a distance, the shape of the rock is reminiscent of a ship under sails , while up close it looks more like a house with a gable .
