Saint Lucia Livre

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Saint Lucia Livre ( S: Lucie ) was a French colonial currency in St. Lucia until 1814. The Saint Lucia Livre was made from blends of Spanish colonial coins. The livre was divided into 20 sous , each of 12 deniers . The escalin was worth 15 sous and the stampee was worth 3 sous 9 denier (1/4 escalin). By 1813, 12 escalins had the equivalent of 8 real , after that 15 escalins had the equivalent of 8 real. In 1851 the pound sterling was introduced as currency.

Dollars have been in circulation as currency since the late 19th century , first the Saint Lucia dollar , then the British West Indies dollar, and today the East Caribbean dollar is in use.

Coins

From 1798 coins of 2, 3, 4 and 6 escalins were issued. These were made from sixth, quarter, third and half coins of 8 reals, on which the letters "SL" were minted.

The coins that were issued from 1811 onwards consisted of 3 stampee, 1, 1½ and 2 escalins coins. The former two were made from quarters and thirds from 2-reales coins, while the higher two were made from quarters and thirds from 4-reales-coins. The 3 stampees were counter-stamped with a serrated ring, while 1-, 1½- and 2-escalins were counter-stamped with one, two and three circles.

The last editions, from 1813, were 3 and 9 escalins. These coins were made by cutting 8-reales coins into three parts, with the two outer parts, one fifth of the coin each being used for the 3-escalins and the inner part, three-fifths in weight, making the 9-escalins . These coins were counterminted with "S: Lucie".
