Sculpture of St. Mathurin in Larchant

The Saint Mathurin sculpture in the St-Mathurin basilica in Larchant , a French commune in the Seine-et-Marne department of the Île-de-France region , was created in the 15th century. A source reports that the sculpture of saints came to Larchant from Paris in 1462 by a monk.

In 1938, the sculpture of Saint Mathurin, also known as Mathurin by Larchant, was added to the list of architectural monuments in France as Monument historique .

The 1.74 meter high wooden sculpture was sold in 1880 by Abbé Gomart, pastor in Larchant, to the collector Eugène Thoison. After his death in 1936, Abbé Romain bought it from the estate.

Theodora, the daughter of the Roman emperor Maximian, is shown kneeling at the feet of St. Mathurin , whom the saint is said to have cured of her obsession .
