Saka no Ue no Kumo
Saka no Ue no Kumo ( Japanese 坂 の 上 の 雲 , German "clouds over the slope") is a novel by the Japanese author Shiba Ryōtarō . It is considered the author's best-known work.
The novel first appeared as a series in the Sankei Shimbun newspaper between 1968 and 1972 and was then published in six individual volumes and eight paperback volumes. In 2009, Juliet Winters Carpenter announced a translation of all volumes into English at the Japan Writers Conference, in which translators Paul McCarthy and Andrew Cobbing, editor Phyllis Birnbaum and advisor Mr. Takechi also participated. The translations appeared from the end of 2012 in individual volumes under the English title Clouds above the Hill: A historical novel of the Russo-Japanese War by Routledge .
The plot begins in the Meiji period and essentially focuses on the résumés of Akiyama Yoshifuru , his brother Akiyama Saneyuki and her friend Masaoka Shiki , from their childhood in the 1860s through the time of the First Sino-Japanese War to Russian - Japanese War of 1904–1905.
In 2007, the “ Saka no Ue no Kumo Museum ” dedicated to the novel was founded in the city of Matsuyama .
The novel was filmed from 2009 to 2011 by the television station NHK under the title Saka no Ue no Kumo in 13 episodes.
