Sakaka ( Arabic سكاكا, DMG Sakākā ; also Sakakah ) is a city in northwest Saudi Arabia and the capital of the province of al-Jauf . It is located north of the Nafud Desert. Sakaka had a population of 242,813 in a 2010 population census.

history

The history of al-Jauf goes back over 4000 years.

In recent years, the Saudi Arabian government has invested money in the al-Jauf region, particularly in Sakaka, to help develop the economically starved region of the kingdom. As a result, the city is filled with new government buildings, schools, and hospitals bordering the crumbling ruins of older buildings that are decades old and in dire need of renovation.

education

A few kilometers south of the city is the campus of the University of al-Jauf ( Al Jouf University or Jamiʿat al-Jauf), which was founded in 2005.

There are some government-run schools as well as private schools. The city has three English schools: Sakaka International School, which is an Indian school and includes CBSE courses, Al-Jouf International School with a British curriculum, and Alqimam International School with an American curriculum.

Attractions

The region is rich in archaeological attractions such as the Za'bal Castle and the Cistern, the Omar-ibn-al-Chattab Mosque, which is located in Dumat al-Jandal , and the Mard Castle (south of Sakaka). There are also the Rajajil stones, an archaeological site that is almost 6000 years old.
