Edificio Rex

The Edificio Rex is a building in the Uruguayan capital, Montevideo .

The building, which was built in 1927, according to other information between 1926 and 1928, is located in the Barrio Centro at Avenida 18 de Julio 1002, corner of Julio Herrera y Obes opposite Plaza Fabini . The architect Alfredo Jones Brown was responsible for the construction . In its original use it served as a residential apartment, office and commercial building and from 1928 to 1980 housed the Cine Rex Theater on the ground floor, a cinema with a capacity of 850 people. Instead of the cinema, there is now an event hall, the Sala Zitarrosa . Between 1996 and 1999, renovation and renovation work was carried out on the Sala Zitarrosa , which has 531 seats, under the direction of architects Conrado Pintos , Alberto Valenti and Arturo Silva Montero . The Edificio Rex is architecturally assigned to historical eclecticism .

The Edificio Rex has been classified as a Monumento Histórico Nacional since 1996 .
