Salah Eldin Ahmed Ragab ( Arabic صلاح الدين أحمد رجب, DMG Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn Aḥmad Raǧab ; * 1935 ; † July 3, 2008 in Cairo ) was an Egyptian military musician (drummer, pianist) who initiated the spread of modern jazz in his home country.

Live and act

Salah Ragab has directed the military music of Egypt since the 1960s with the rank of major . As a jazz fan, he founded a special orchestra with military musicians in 1968, whose musicians learned to play jazz with the support of the bassist Edu Vizvari, who came from the Gustav Brom orchestra ; this Cairo Jazz Band also appeared publicly from 1969 onwards. Under his direction she initially played arrangements by Count Basie , Buck Clayton , Joki Freund , Bernd Rabe , Peter Herbolzheimer , Wolfgang Dauner and Albert Mangelsdorff , but soon explored the field of free jazz and recorded his own compositions. Among other things, this band performed in 1971 with the Arkestra of Sun Ra ; a partial ensemble appeared in the same year with the Fourmenonly ( Herbert Joos , Wilfried Eichhorn, Claus Buehler, Rudolf Theilmann ). Ragab also played with Embryo and Abdullah Ibrahim ( Embryo's Journey ). In 1983 the Sun Ra Arkestra recorded two of his compositions during a later stay in Egypt . With Sun Ras Arkestra he also appeared in 1984 as a conga player in Greece.
