The Salamander Range is a distinctly straight mountain range in the north of the East Antarctic Victoria Land . It looms between the Canham and Black glaciers in the Freyberg Mountains . A prominent mountain of this mountain range is the 2555 m high Mount Apolotok made of red granite .
The northern group of a campaign carried out from 1963 to 1964 as part of the New Zealand Geological Survey Antarctic Expedition named the range after the nickname of the British General Bernard Freyberg, 1st Baron Freyberg , who gave it to Winston Churchill based on the traditional belief that the fire salamander was invulnerable received by fire .
