The Salar de Aguas Calientes I is a geomorphological salt pan in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile . It is embedded in the high Puna east of the Cerros de la Pacana ( 23 ° 3 ′  S , 67 ° 33 ′  W ), about 105 km east of San Pedro de Atacama on the road to the Jama Pass.

The Salar de Aguas Calientes I is the depression of a drainless water catchment area of ​​263 km 2 with 56 tributaries. On its total area of ​​15 km 2 there are three seasonally changing lakes with a total area of ​​3 to 6.7 km 2 . The water volume varies between 1.9 and 3.2 million cubic meters. Most of the water comes from the northwest through the Quebrada Peña Negra from the slopes of Cerro Incahuasi ( 23 ° 0 ′  S , 67 ° 34 ′  W ), and from the northeast through the Río Aguas Calientes, which carries warm water.
