The Salesian convent Sulzbach is a former convent of the Salesian women in Sulzbach-Rosenberg in Bavaria in the diocese of Regensburg .

history

Since 1755 Salesians in Sulzbach were active in education for girls. The monastery, consecrated to St. Hedwig , was founded on May 8th, 1753 by Eleonore Philippine von Sulzbach, widow of Duke Johann Christian von Sulzbach . The Duchess bequeathed her entire fortune to the monastery after her death, her heart was buried in the monastery church. The Duchess died in Neuburg an der Donau in 1759 . Her body rests in the court church there , her heart was brought to Sulzbach in a vessel, where it is now kept behind the stone tablet on the south side next to the high altar. The inscription there reads:

Christ is my life, dying is a gain - heart of the illustrious duchess and founder of this monastery Eleonora Philippina, née. on October 17, 1712, died May 23, 1759 at the age of 47. You rest in peace.

In 1762 the head of the monastery, Anna Rosalie von Fick, submitted an application to the diocese of Regensburg for the construction of the missing, but "so necessary" church. This was immediately granted. As with the monastery, the construction was directed by the Amberg city master builder Wolf Dirmann and was completed in 1764. Sulzbach was a branch of the Salesian convent in Amberg , in 1755 6 nuns from Amberg moved into the convent. The four-story monastery building abuts the church at right angles. In 1804 nuns came from the dissolved Salesian convent Amberg, who were guaranteed a stay until the end of their lives.

The monastery was dissolved in 1809 in the course of secularization . The church remained. The Royal Bavarian Rent Office was housed in the monastery buildings one after the other in 1804 , the regional court from 1827 and barracks in 1850 .
