The Saligo Bay is a bay on the west coast of the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . It is located north of the Rhinns of Islay peninsula about 1.5 km west of Loch Gorm , the largest lake in Islay, about 13 km west of Bridgend and 15 km north of Portnahaven . The closest village is the small settlement of Ballinaby . At the entrance, the bay, which cuts about 130 m deep into the land, is 600 m wide. In the south, the bay is bounded by Cape Coul Point and separated from the neighboring bay of Machir Bay . The north and south coasts of Saligo Bay are usually rocky, but at the head the bay ends in a sandy beach area. At the south end of Saligo Bay flows into a small stream called the Saligo River , which flows out of Loch Gorm. About two kilometers to the north, the striking headland of Rubha Lamanais protrudes from the island's land mass.

Surroundings

Several Viking tombs have been found in the Saligo Bay area, suggesting that Saligo Bay was used as a burial site. This includes a 2.1 m × 50 cm stone complex in which a single body was buried. The grave finds include an iron ax, a brozen shield hump and the fragments of an iron knife. The remains of a man and woman from the 10th century were discovered in another grave in 1877. Iron tools and weapons, an ornate clasp, and bronze and silver jewelry were found as grave goods. The finds are now in the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh . Excavations on a sand mound around 1800 uncovered numerous bones, two swords and a spear . A shield boss was later found at this point. Other finds at Saligo Bay include two oval brooches and a sword.
