Loch Gorm , also known as Guirm , is the largest lake on the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . It is located in the flat plains on the northern border of the Rhinns of Islay peninsula , which fills the southwest of the island. Loch Gorm has a maximum length of 2.5 m and a width of 1.9 km. It has several small tributaries, but the main one is the Leoig , which flows out of Loch Corr to the north . Three streams run off Loch Gorm. The Saligo River in the northwest flows into the Scottish Sea after just under two kilometers in Saligo Bay , while the Allt nan Criche flows off in the southwest and flows into Machir Bay . From the south-east bank another stream flows in a south-easterly direction to Loch Indaal , an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean. Although Loch Gorm is surrounded by peat bogs, it has a sandy bottom and is usually flat. Loch Gorm is accessible via the B8028, which branches off the A847 between Bridgend and Port Charlotte . It is suitable for trout fishing.
Islands
There are three islands in Loch Gorm. Eilean Mor , located in the southeast about 350 m from the lakeshore, was the site of a McDonald’s castle called Loch Gorm Castle in their time as Lords of the Isles . This was destroyed in 1608, but rebuilt. The ruins that are preserved today have a square floor plan with round corner towers. The buildings are likely from the late 16th and early 17th centuries. There was a jetty near the castle.
The island in the east of the lake could be a crannóg . It is not certain whether it is an artificial island. There is a partially preserved, underwater dam on the eastern shore of the lake, of which only the middle section is left today. In the middle of the island are the 80 cm thick foundation walls of a 6 m × 5 m building. It has not been clarified to what extent the building and the dam are historical structures.
To the west of Loch Gorm is Eilean nan Uan, the largest of the three islands. It is only about 150 m away from the lake shore. There are no buildings on this island.
