Loch Gorm Castle is the ruin of a low castle on the island of Eilean Mòr (English: large island) on Loch Gorm on the island of Islay in the Scottish administrative unit Argyll and Bute . The castle was once a fortress of the MacDonald clan .
description
The castle was square in plan with a round bastion on each corner. The ruins are now heavily overgrown and the remains of the wall are no longer very high. From the coast the island looks empty.
Loch Gorm Castle is a Scheduled Monument .
history
In 1578 Sir Lachlan Mor MacLean from Duart stayed at the castle for a while during his campaign to (re-) conquer the Rinns of Islay . He was chased from there by the MacDonalds of Dunnyveg with the help of Colin Campbell, 6th Earl of Argyll , cousin of Sir Lachlan.
Loch Gorm Castle had been in ruins since 1586, but in 1608 the castle was completely destroyed by royal troops under Andrew Stuart, 3rd Lord Ochiltree . It was later repaired and Ranald MacDonald of Smerby ran the garrison at Loch Gorm Castle. He surrendered with her on January 28, 1615 Sir John Campbell of Cawdor and gave him the castle. Sir James MacDonald, 9th of Dunnyveg , took the island again in April 1615, leaving behind a new garrison on Eilean Mòr. In 1639 and 1640 a private garrison was maintained there.
