St. Peter and Paul

The Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul in Grünsfeld , a town in the Main-Tauber district in Baden-Württemberg , is essentially a late Gothic church from the 14th and 15th centuries. In the 17th century the church was given a baroque nave , and in the 1960s it was expanded with an extension.

history

The place is mentioned in a document as early as the 8th century. The foundation of the parish and the construction of the first church is attributed to St. Boniface . A pastor was first mentioned in Grünsfeld in 1225 and a church was first mentioned in writing in 1323. The current church was started in the second half of the 14th century. In 1659 the Gothic nave had to be demolished due to dilapidation and replaced by the current one. In 1966/68 a transverse room was added in the north between the tower and the nave.

The Catholic parish of St. Peter and Paul belongs to the pastoral care unit Grünsfeld-Wittighausen, which has been assigned to the Tauberbischofsheim deanery of the Archdiocese of Freiburg since a reform of the deanery on January 1, 2008 .

Exterior construction

On the north side of the choir rises the 75 meter high tower, the three lower floors of which date from the 14th century. After a fire in 1858, the top floor was raised according to plans by building inspector Haufe from Wertheim and provided with a neo-Gothic tracery parapet and a slim pointed helmet.

The main portal is on the west facade. The inscription on the tympanum recalls the year of construction in 1659 and names Johann Philipp von Schönborn , the builder, who as Archbishop of Mainz was one of the Electors of the Holy Roman Empire and as Bishop of Würzburg, Duke of Franconia . The sculptures of the two church patrons , the apostles Peter and Paul , and in the middle, Christ as Savior, stand above the portal roof . The portal of the southern nave is crowned by a figure of Mary.

inner space

The choir dates back to the late 14th century. It is closed polygonally and covered with a reticulated vault, which replaced the original ribbed vault in the second half of the 15th century . The fish-bubble tracery of the choir windows was probably also made during this time . The keystone above the altar is decorated with a coat of arms.

In the south, the nave opens up in two large round arches resting on an octagonal pillar to the Lady Chapel, which is dated to the 15th century. The corner consoles are carved with angel figures holding coats of arms with the tools of Christ's passion .

The baroque nave is covered with a flat ceiling. The arched windows have tracery forms borrowed from the Gothic. The western end is formed by the originally two-story organ and singing gallery, the second floor of which was removed during the renovations in the 1960s to make room for the new organ.
