Sally Free and Easy is the half-century unreleased debut solo album by acoustic guitarist Jon Mark , signed by record producer Shel Talmy around 1964 .
History and impact
The acoustic folk album, produced by Talmy in July and August 1965 and intended for early release, was only released in 2017 with a few outtakes and Jon Mark's debut single, recorded in November 1964 (Baby I've Got A Long Way To Go / Night Comes Down) as bonus tracks on the Cherry Red Records label .
When recording the folk classic Sally Free and Easy , Jon Mark accompanied himself with a sitar , making his album, which Talmy played to Ray Davies of the Kinks in the summer of 1965 , one of the first pop and folk albums on which the sitar was used as a defining accompanying instrument. However, since the finished album remained unreleased until 2017, the Kinks received the honor of being the first to integrate sitar sounds into pop music. Talmy has repeatedly pointed out in interviews that it was Jon Mark's unpublished song that inspired Davies to mimic the Kinks hit "See My Friends" on the sitar.
