Laojun Shan saltpeter caves

The sites of the saltpetre caves of Laojun Shan ( Chinese  老君山 硝 洞 遗址 , Pinyin Lǎojūn Shān xiāodòng yízhǐ ) from the time of the Ming to Qing dynasties are located in the Laojun Shan Mountains in the area of ​​the city of Jiangyou in the Chinese province of Sichuan . In 2003, gunpowder- making sites were discovered in and around Zhonghua Township ( 重 华 镇 ) . The place is known as the "home of gunpowder" ( 火药 之 乡 , huǒyào zhī xiāng ) and gunpowder is one of the four great inventions of China.

The sites have been on the List of Monuments of the People's Republic of China (6-183) since 2006 .
