The National Park Narew ( Polish Narwiański Park Narodowy ) is located in the northeastern part of Poland not far from Białystok in the Podlaskie Voivodeship .

General

An important part of the national park is the Upper Narew Valley between Suraż and Rzędziany , which belongs to the Narew Landscape Park (Narwiański Park Krajobrazowy) founded in 1985 . This extraordinary water maze with a network of branching and connecting river beds is one of the last regularly flooded river plains in Europe. Bogs, wetlands and bodies of water are the dominant ecosystems and comprise around 90% of the park area. The valley is fed by surface water and groundwater from the near-surface level as well as a large number of smaller rivers such as Liza, Szeroka Struga, Awissa, Kurówka, Kowalówka, Turośnianka and Czaplinianka. The national park is a unique example of an anastomizing river. Because of its uniqueness, this area is often referred to as the Polish Amazonia .

flora

Almost 200 species of vascular plants can be found in the moors and marshes, 13 of which are protected species . Reeds clearly dominate the look . There are also numerous meadow and forest communities in the national park, some of which are rare in Poland.

fauna

Birds are the main focus of the Narew Valley and the National Park. In the years 1979–1981, 179 bird species were found in the valley, including 149 nesting species. The national park is an important breeding refuge for water and marsh birds of international and European importance. It's breeding area of more than 1% of the European population of at least 10 species of birds including the bittern , the Garganey , the Marsh Harrier , the Harrier , the Little Crake , the Spotted Crake and the snipe three and Schlüpfstätte bird species that are threatened with extinction worldwide - the white-tailed eagle , the corncrake and the sedge warbler . Mammals can also be seen in the park area, including a small population of elk and otters and numerous beavers (260 animals).
