distribution and habitat

The Salvadorean fig parrot lives in forests, forest edges and partially cleared land at altitudes of up to 400 m, often in the vicinity of human settlements. Its distribution extends to Geelving Bay.

Way of life

The Salvadoran fig parrot usually lives in pairs or in groups of three outside the breeding season. It can usually be seen in the treetops. It often flies over the canopy of leaves, but occasionally only 3 meters above the ground. Its diet consists of fruits (especially figs), nectar, flowers and probably insects and their larvae. When eating, you can often see it upside down.

Existence and endangerment

The Salvadori's Fig Parrot is from the IUCN "endangered" category ( vulnerable ) classified. The main threat is the pet trade. 1,582 Salvadori fig parrots were sold both in Indonesia and overseas between 1985 and 1990. Between 1990 and 2001 there were 1,791 parrots. Another threat is the steadily growing population and the associated clearing of forests. BirdLife International estimates the total population at 10,000 specimens.
