Salvatore "Chuckie" Merlino (born June 29, 1939 , † October 22, 2012 ) was an Italian-American mobster of the American Cosa Nostra and in the 1980s the underboss of the Bruno family (Philadelphia Crime Family) from Philadelphia ( Pennsylvania ) . He is the brother of the former family capo Lawrence “Yogi” Merlino , as well as the father of Joseph Salvatore “Skinny Joey” Merlino , who has been the new boss of the family since 1994 .

Life

Born in Ducktown (Atlantic City) , “Chuckie” and his brother “Yogi” met their later family boss Nicodemo “Little Nicky” Scarfo when they were young .

On March 16, 1962, his wife Rita gave birth to their son Joseph Salvatore Merlino.

In 1979, Salvatore Merlino, Salvatore "Salvie" Testa and Robert "Bobby" Lumio murdered 31-year-old drug dealer Michael "Coco" Cifelli. This is said to have sold drugs to the son of family capo Frank Monte . Michael Cifelli was shot dead by Merlino and Testa while talking on the phone in the phone box of a bar in Point Breeze, Philadelphia.

In 1981 Merlino became the underboss of Nicky Scarfo, until he demoted him to a simple soldato again in 1986 due to his severe alcohol problems . Mafia expert and writer George Anastasia of The Philadelphia Inquirer said: "He was stopped in Margate City, New Jersy for drunk driving. Merlino, who often drank more than he could handle, tried to bribe the cops when they were with him He offered $ 400 in cash and his gold watch. Merlino made that offer while he was in the police station. The cops got it all on video. " From 1982 to 1984 Merlino was also acting boss, while Scarfo was jailed for violating the gun law.

On May 23, 1984, he and his son were banned from casinos in the state of New Jersey by the New Jersey Casino Control Commission in August of the same year .

Salvatore Merlino was charged with extortion and murder in the 1980s and imprisoned in 1986. In 2012, Salvatore "Chuckie" Merlino died of natural causes while in prison. His regular release from prison would have been on August 3, 2016.
