Salvatore Vitale (art critic)

Salvatore Vitale ( Catania 1887 - February 1954 ) was an Italian library clerk and art critic . After studying law, Vitale began an administrative career in the Ministry of Education in the 1910s, where in 1923 he was promoted to the rank of department head in the General Directorate for Antiques and Fine Arts. He took part in the First World War. After the General Directorate for Academies and Libraries was founded in October 1926, Vitale switched to the State Librarianship, where he held various functions as library director until his retirement. Vitale was director of the Biblioteca Angelica in Rome from 1926 to 1936 and from 1942 to 1954 he was employed at the Istituto Storico Italiano per l'Età Moderna e Contemporanea. In parallel to his work as an administrative employee, Vitale was also active as an art critic for various newspapers and magazines (including Giornale di Sicilia , Rivoluzione liberale ).

In addition to contributions from the field of architecture and art criticism, Vitale is primarily the editor of two books on the manuscript collections of the Biblioteca Angelica (published in 1934 and 1948) and the catalogs of the Neapolitan leaflets from 1848–1849 (1956) and 1860–1861 ( 1963) known from the Library of Modern and Modern History in Rome. His architecture- critical work L'estetica dell'architettura , published in 1928 and reviewed by Marcello Piacentini, among others .
