The Salzland Museum in Schönebeck (Elbe) is the only district museum in the Salzland district . It was founded in 1924 and moved to its current location in the former town hall of Bad Salzelmen , the former Groß Salze , in 1954 . The permanent exhibition primarily deals with the topics of salt settlement and inland shipping on the Elbe and Saale in the Salzland district. In addition, the museum presents regularly changing special exhibitions in two rooms.

history

On February 14, 1924, the Society for Prehistory and Local Lore was founded in Schönebeck . According to the statutes, the task was: “... the exploration of the entire material and ideal culture of the Calbe district from prehistory to the present. Her goal was therefore to found a local museum in which the overall picture of this cultural development can be seen. A scientific collection was sought as a necessary addition to it ... "

The first chairman was Albert Mnung, principal of the Realgymnasium; The second chairman was the businessman, shipowner and local researcher Wolfgang Wanckel. Local researcher Wilhelm Schulze was one of the founders . The first exhibition rooms were in the attic of today's Karl Liebknecht School in Schönebeck. On June 30, 1924, the then District Administrator Voss granted the approval for the establishment of a local museum in Schönebeck. After the Second World War , the museum found its place for some time in the rooms of the former synagogue in Schönebeck. In 1954, with the former town hall of Schönebeck- Bad Salzelmen, the new building was made available for exhibition purposes and storage rooms. In the following years there were exhibitions on prehistory, salt history, geology, regional history, a room for special exhibitions and in the gallery room for shipping.

In 2011 the Schönebeck District Museum was renamed the Salzland Museum. In the course of this, the new museum concept was created. The renovation of the house was completed with the opening of the permanent exhibitions in 2015.

Since the completion of the reconstruction of the Pommelte Ring Sanctuary in 2016, it has been operated by the Salzland Museum . Guided tours are also offered.

building

The museum is located in the Bad Salzelmen district, Pfännerstrasse 41, a few meters from the Johanniskirche and the graduation tower. The southern part of the former town hall of Groß Salze was built before 1400. The northern part was added in 1536. This is where the pancakes held their council meetings and this is where the mayor sat . In the 18th century the town hall received a stepped gable and the portal with the gilded boiler basket. At the same time, the gable roof with the two-storey lattice tower was added, in which a clock bell from 1428 still strikes today. It was the first and for a long time the only clock in the district of Groß Salze. In 1913, a town hall was added in the neo-Renaissance style . In 1932, in the course of the incorporation of Salzelmen into the town of Schönebeck, the town hall was given up as the mayor's administrative seat.

business

In addition to museum education, the Salzland Museum also includes a multimedia room.
