biography

Abal is a member of the National Alliance Party and was elected Member of Parliament for it.

On August 29, 2007 he was appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs, Trade and Immigration by Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare and is a member of the 27-member Somares Cabinet.

In January 2009 he campaigned for Fiji to remain in the Pacific Islands Forum , but on May 2, 2009 the situation there resulted in a suspension. In July 2009, he signed together with the Commissioner for Trade of the European Union (EU) , Catherine Ashton , a trade and development agreement between the EU and Papua New Guinea.

When Michael Somare temporarily resigned from office in mid-December 2010 and then resumed office a month later, his deputy, Sam Abal, was in charge of office in the meantime. Since April 2011 Somare has been hospitalized in Singapore for a serious illness . Abal represented him until the parliament of Papua New Guinea declared the office of prime minister vacant on August 2, 2011, and Peter O'Neill was elected as the new prime minister by 70 to 24 votes. Abal had long been considered a favorite to succeed Somares. A murder charge against his adopted son Teo Abal made him unpopular.
