Sambor Prei Kuk ( Khmer ប្រាសាទសំបូរព្រៃគុក Prasat Sambor Prei Kuk ) is the modern name of a Hindu temple complex in what is now Cambodia , in what is now Kampong Thom Province . They are the remains of the ancient city of Isanapura ( Khmer ឦសាន បុ រៈ Eisan bora ).

Isanavarman I made Isanapura the capital of his Kingdom of Chenla in 616 , which flourished here in the seventh and eighth centuries AD. Isanapura probably existed before the sixth century. The ruins consist of over 150 temples and towers and cover an area of ​​over 400 hectares . There are three main complexes that were surrounded by walls. The temples are richly decorated with reliefs.

Sambor Prei Kuk was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage on July 8, 2017 at the 41st meeting of the World Heritage Committee. As criteria for acceptance, UNESCO names 1) the unique architecture, urban planning and landscape planning, which is an adaptation from India and has produced its own style, 2) the testimony of what was once the largest religious pilgrimage center, which is a tolerant mixture of Hindu and Buddhist Religions symbolize, and 3) the first use or mention of the Harihara and Sakabrahma cults, the first mention of the universal teachings of Buddhism in Southeast Asia, the first recorded use of the Khmer script, and the earliest depictions of traditional orchestras.
