The Cervantes collection of the Biblioteca de Catalunya is one of the most outstanding public collections on Miguel de Cervantes and his work.
It found its origin in 1915 in a donation of around 3,400 volumes by the bibliophile Isidre Bonsoms from Barcelona . It includes both Cervantes' works in the original language and translations as well as biographical and literary critical texts as well as adapted, inspired and iconographic works.
history
In 1914, Isidre Bonsoms i Sicart , a Catalan bibliophile and scholar, informed the then responsible inspector Jaume Massó i Torrents and director Jordi Rubió y Balaguer that he would donate to the Biblioteca de Catalunya his Cervantes collection, which he had put together over years of painstaking research wool. About a third of these books originally came from the possession of Leopold Rius (1840–1898), the founder of the modern Cervantine bibliography.
When the newly founded library received the collection of 3367 volumes in 1915, the holdings were initially housed in the blue room of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans in the Palacio de la Generalidad. From there they were relocated in 1936 to the Sala Cervantina, which is now the library headquarters in the former Hospital de la Santa Cruz. In order to make the unique and valuable holdings easier for the public, Joan Givanel was commissioned by the Institut d'Estudis Catalans to create a catalog as the first person in charge of this collection.
Since then, the collection has been continuously developed and is still growing through acquisitions, donations, exchanges and deposit copies. The collection currently comprises around 9,000 volumes.
Content and outstanding copies
In addition to the bibliographical value of the entire collection, a few individually first-rate specimens should also be mentioned.
The collection contains the first editions of all original and translated works by Cervantes - with the exception of La Galatea , of which there is a very rare copy of the second edition published in Lisbon in 1590.
Among the numerous valuable pieces in the collection, the following examples of editions of Miguel de Cervantes' most famous work, the Quixote , stand out:
- a copy of the six editions of the first part printed in 1605. According to the Censo de ejemplares - developed by the Investigación Prinqeps group in 1605 and directed by Víctor Infantes - one of 28 existing copies of the first edition is now in the Biblioteca de Catalunya.
- Copies of all 65 editions that were made during the Spanish Golden Age.
- a copy of the first edition containing both parts and published in Barcelona in 1617.
- a copy of the English edition by Edward Bount [1617], which contains one of the first depictions of the two main characters Quixote and Sancho
- First editions of the translations into English (1612), French (1614), Italian (1622), German (1648), Dutch (1657) and other languages. The collection now contains a total of Quijote translations in more than 51 languages.
- Illustrated editions by outstanding artists such as Charles Coypel, Juan Antonio Pellicer, Luis de Madrazo, Eusebi Planas i Franquesa, Apel • les Mestres, Gustave Doré , José Moreno Carbonero , Salvador Dalí , Antonio Saura or Josep Segrelles.
- one of the five copies of the edition printed on parchment by Gabriel de Sancha and including notes by Juan Antonio Pellicer.
Among the original graphic works, the collection of 16 watercolors, 15 of which served as illustrations for the Quixote edition of the Real Academia Española from 1780, should be emphasized. Also drawings by u. a. Antonio Carnicero, José del Castillo and José Brunete as well as the originals by, for example, Jaume Juez i Castellà or Eberhard Schlotter are particularly worth mentioning.
In addition to Miguel de Cervantes' own works , biographies, studies and reviews are also collected for the collection . Ephimeric materials from small pictures and playing cards to cinema posters (for example by Dulcinea ) as well as some objects, together with the illustrated editions and the original graphics, offer an overview of the wide range of Cervantine iconography. In addition, some scores such as that of the symphonic poem Don Quixote by Richard Strauss and also various audio and audiovisual media such as B. Oper DQ the variety of media types represented.
Finally, in addition to the many different parts of the collection, an oil portrait of Isidre Bonsoms by the painter José María Vidal-Quadras and a bronze bust of Cervantes made by the sculptor Josep Reynés are kept in the library room.
Parts of the Cervantes Collection are made accessible under a public domain on the Memória Digital de Catalunya portal.
