Isidre Bonsoms i Sicart (* 1849 in Barcelona ; † November 14, 1922 in Mallorca ) was a Catalan bibliophile and scholar.

Life

In 1910 he bequeathed the Biblioteca de Catalunya a collection of historical-political brochures on events in the history of Catalonia from the 16th to 19th centuries, mostly printed in Catalonia. It contains material from historical events, legal orders, public proclamations, parties, leaflets and diatribes. Bonsoms also collected a variety of reports on trials and judgments, political speeches, sermons on the occasion of various events, printed matter of local interest, novels and other small literature on various topics.

In 1914, Isidre Bonsoms informed the Biblioteca de Catalunya of his intention to donate his extensive Cervantes collection of 3,367 volumes to it. It was added to the library's holdings in 1915 and is now one of the most valuable and largest collections on Cervantes and his work. It includes works by Cervantes in the original language and translations, biographical and literary critical works as well as works inspired, adapted and iconographic works from the original. The collection currently comprises around 9,000 volumes, including originals of the first editions of all of Cervantes' works except for La Galatea , of which the second edition is available. It also includes the first six editions of the Quixote from 1605, bibliophile copies and publications of Cervantes' work in more than 50 languages.

In honor of the generous scholar, the Institut d'Estudis Catalans created the Isidre Bonsoms Prize. It honors the best work among all research papers, publications, bibliographies, works of art, reviews, biographies and musical works as well as all novels and short stories related to Cervantes' work or other stories of adventure and knighthood.
