Samuel Percy Cookson (born January 17, 1891 in Bargoed , † 1974 ) was a Welsh football player .

Career

Cookson was signed in February 1914 as a player from Bargoed Town for the small transfer fee of £ 50 from the English first division club Manchester United , initially an amateur, he received a professional contract in May 1914 and earned from then on during the season £ 4 per week and £ 2.5 during the season break . The Welshman made his league debut on December 26, 1914 in a 1-1 draw against Liverpool at Anfield Road . In the following weeks Cookson was regularly used as an outside runner in the team around superstar Billy Meredith , not least because the previous team captain George Hunter, who was actually in this position , had been suspended indefinitely for disciplinary reasons. With the commitment of James Montgomery in March 1915, he lost his place in the team again and therefore did not participate in the second leg against Liverpool on April 2, which was used by several players from both teams to manipulate bets. In the war-related replacement competitions - regular game operations had been discontinued because of the First World War at the end of the 1914/15 season - Cookson was occasionally used. In 1919 he was released from his contract before normal league operations were resumed.
