Life

Hermelin was the son of the Reichsrat and Freiherr Carl Hermelin (1707–1789) and grandson of Olof Hermelin . He studied mining in Uppsala with the mountain exam in 1761 and was then an auscultant at the Bergkollegium. He dealt with mineralogy , chemistry and metallurgy and visited Norway in 1768 to study geology, metalworking and mining. From 1782 to 1784 he was on a study trip to the USA, where he also received diplomatic powers on behalf of the king to represent commercial interests, which had to be done with discretion because of the good relations between Sweden and England. He was well received by academically interested circles, for example with Benjamin Franklin, and in 1784 became a foreign member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . On the trip he also visited England, the Netherlands, France and Germany. In 1774 he became assessor in the mountain college and in 1781 mountain ridge. From 1796 to 1818 he published a number of geographical maps of Sweden and organized their recording. One of his employees was Carl Peter Hällström. Its primary aim was to improve the exploitation of natural resources in Sweden through geographical and statistical information . He therefore also published maps with mineralogical and geological information. He also invested a lot of his own money in the project. In 1815 he retired as a civil servant.
