Samuel Plimsoll.

Samuel Plimsoll (* 10. February 1824 ; † 3. June 1898 ) was a British MP who against shipping companies took the field who intentionally unseaworthy ships had come out to the shipwreck at the sum insured to obtain.

He mobilized public opinion against Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli and the shipowners for a bill against unseaworthy ships (Unseaworthy Ships Bill). In 1890 it led to the marking of all merchant ships in the kingdom with the so-called freeboard mark , graphically a horizontal line with a circle, which was later adopted by almost all maritime nations.
