Samuel Rhoads

Samuel Rhoads (* 1711 in Philadelphia , Province of Pennsylvania ; †  April 7, 1784 there ) was an American politician . In 1774 he was a delegate for Pennsylvania to the Continental Congress .

Career

Samuel Rhoads received only a limited education and later worked as a carpenter and in the construction industry. In 1741 he became a member of the Philadelphia City Council. From 1761 to 1764 and again between 1771 and 1774 he sat in the colonial House of Representatives of Pennsylvania. He was also the founder and board member of the Pennsylvania Hospital from 1751 to 1781 . In the 1770s he joined the revolutionary movement. In 1774 he represented Pennsylvania in the first continental congress . In the same year he became mayor of his hometown Philadelphia. He later was also a director of the Philadelphia Library . Samuel Rhoads died in Philadelphia on April 7, 1784.
